COALITION DEMANDS TINUBU TO APPOINT WOMAN AS A MINISTER OF HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS

By Gambo Abubakar Kaduna

The Coalition of Concerned Civil Society Organization of Nigeria has demanded President Bola Ahmad Tinubu to appoint at least one woman as a Minister in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The civil society organisation made the appealed in an international press conference organised by the coalition recently held at Arewa house in Kaduna.

According to the Coalition,  the recent cabinet reshuffle and appointment of new Ministers by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not new to us."

"We have gathered here to express our concerns as it affects the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation where two men have been appointed both as the senior and junior Ministers."

The national coordonator of the coalision, Comrade Aminu Arabi  said "it was their firm conviction and position that the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation is designed to be administered by a woman for effective service delivery.

They however noted that, the appointment of a manner to head the sensitive ministry without requisite experience and a disposition for humanitarian work have tendency of plugging Nigerians into deeper levels of poverty and more economic crisis.

" To appoint another man "as the Minister of State is a total aberration and disregard for gender equality and the affirmative action which has been endorsed by the current administration."

“Granted that the last two women appointed to head the Ministry did not deliver as expected, it is not enough reason to deny other qualified, dedicated and competent women of opportunity to contribute their quota to nation building in an area that’s most suited to their God’s given talent and competencies."

Coalition further explained that "failure of Sadia Umar Farouk and Dr. Beta Edu should not be a ban to Nigerian women. It is unacceptable that both the Senior and junior Ministers in the Ministry should be male.

The civil society group also appealed to the President Tinubu to kindly reconsider replacing one of the Ministers with a woman who we believe will pay more attention to the plight of the less privileged and downtrodden as it is typical of all women."

"As Nigerians continue to grapple with the current challenges occasioned by the removal of subsidy on petroleum products and food inflation, Mr. President must act in a responsive manner without political and personal considerations or put smiles on the faces of Nigerians.

“We therefore, patriotically call on Mr. President to reconsider his choice of appointees for the ministry for the sake of Nigerians. A cabinet reshuffle and reassignment of portfolios to the Ministers involved will not be a bad idea."

They also appealed to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu to use her good office and influence to better the lives of women, children and youth through proactive empowerment and employment opportunities.
