KEDCO Workers Embark On Indefinite Strike In Kaduna

The National Union of Electricity Employees, Kaduna state council embarked on an indefite strike, protesting over alleged termination of 900 staff from Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company
The aggrieved workers, who carried placards with various inscriptions , blocked the entrance of the corporate headquarters of the Company and prevented workers and even customers from enter in into the premises.
The aggrieved workers under the umbrella of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) accused the management of non payments of death and retirement benefits disregarding the condition of service.
While speaking, the zonal organising secretary, Northwest, Pukat Ayuba stated that the industrial strike action would continue until the company withdrew termination letters and all benefits be paid to terminated staff and resigned staff .
"If you remember a year a go, we shut down the premises of Kaduna electric and a franchise state under Kaduna electric for staff issues, due to pension and other welfare; one year after, it has not been resolved.
"To worsen it, is the termination of 900 staff without regard to the conditions of service. When you have a policy document that guides administrative affairs of an establishment set aside
"It is unacceptable, by the provision of the land is not acceptable; these number of staff that these people are pushing out has added to the serious problem Nigeria will have",he said.
Meanwhile, a letter from the management of Kaduna Electric, signed by the Deputy Managing Director, Abubakar Mohammed,
to the affected workers, dated January 31, 2025, directed them to hand over the company’s property in their possession to the human resources department immediately,
The letter further stated that plans to pay them their severance packages are underway adding that their services were no longer needed by the company effective from 31ist of January, 2025.
