Zamfara State has reported a notable increase in tuberculosis detection rates and a 99% treatment success rate, the state's health Commissioner announced Tuesday.
Dr. Nafisa Muhammed Maradun, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Malam Bashir Surajo Gusau at a press briefing to commemorate World TB Day 2025, said the state screened 972,061 people, identifying 10,216 confirmed TB cases. Of those, 5,313 patients were cured or completed treatment.
Dr. Maradun further said that the state recorded 18 TB-related deaths, representing a 1% death rate.
"Through a combination of effective prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies, we have been able to reduce the burden of TB on our population," the Commissioner said.
Speaking under the theme "Yes! We Can End TB. Commit, Invest, Deliver"
she stated that increased detection rates were attributed to improved diagnostic techniques and targeted screening efforts.
The state received nine Truenat molecular machines, five TB Lamp machines, and four portable digital X-ray machines, with training for facility staff.
To improve logistical support, the state also received two Toyota Hilux vehicles and 28 Boxer motorcycles.
Dr. Maradun emphasized the state's focus on improving patient care, strengthening health systems, and conducting community outreach and education campaigns.
"While we have made significant progress, our work is far from over," she said, reiterating the state's commitment to ending TB.
The state's efforts were highlighted as a model for other regions.
