Zamfara Gives Seasonal Malaria Treatment To 1.4M Children, 3.2M Insecticides Treated Nets In 2024

The Zamfara state Commissioner Of Health Dr Nafisa Muhammad Maradun has said that in the year 2023-2024, 3.2 million insecticide-treated nets were distributed with support from the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative, achieving 98% utilization.
The Commissioner further explained that 1.5 million children under five received seasonal malaria chemoprevention in 2024.
Dr, Nafisa made this known today at a Press Conference to mark this year's World Malaria Day, held at the conference hall of the Ministry.
According to her, data from 2025 indicates that 98.6% malaria testing rate and 99.2% of positive cases consistently maintained since 2022.
The Commissioner who spoke through Permanent Secretary Of the ministry Malan Bashir Surajo Gusau added that, preventative treatment for pregnant women in their first trimester increased from 48% to 80.1% as at first quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025.
She said that the malaria prevalence rate has decreased from 62.8% last December to 54% as of January 2025, with clinically diagnosed cases dropping from 5% in 2023 to under 1% this year.
The World Health Organization and other development partners have pledged to continue supporting Zamfara state in surveillance, commodity distribution, data quality, and training.
The Commissioner urged continued cooperation to further reduce malaria's burden, thanking the state governor Dr. Dauda Lawal for prioritizing health and partners for their support.
The theme for this year’s World Malaria Day is "Time to end malaria with us: reinvest, reimagine, reignite," with the slogan "Stay Committed."
Dr Nafisa Muhammed Maradun made it clear that a partnership with stakeholders, including the media and international organizations, has yielded significant results.
