Zamfara Takes Steps To Reduce Maternal, Newborn Mortality Rates

The Zamfara state government is taking strong steps to reduce maternal and newborn mortality rates, according to Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, the state's health commissioner.
Dr. Maradun stated that addressing this critical issue is a top priority for Governor Dauda Lawal's administration.
She stated that the state has declared a health emergency to deal with the problem.
The Commissioner highlighted several government efforts to improve health for women and children; these include making it easier to access good health care across the state.
Dr. Maradun said health centers are being fixed up and improved to meet the state and international standards, leading to better health care. Hospitals and clinics are also getting new medical tools and equipment.
The Commissioner stressed that the state government cares deeply about its people, especially pregnant mothers and children as evidenced by the various high impact activities planned for in the 2025 annual operational plan .
The actions shows a strong dedication to providing good health care and lowering risks during childbirth.
Dr. Maradun believes these efforts will greatly cut down on maternal and newborn deaths in all 14 local government areas of the State.
She added that getting lasting solutions and results will be achieved with increased staff dedication and teamwork.
Commissioner of Health Dr Nafisa Muhammad was represented by the permanent secretary of the Ministry, Malan Bashiru Surajo Gusau.
In her Comments the Zonal Coordinator of CEmONC under Jhpiego, Dr Comfort Okpe represented by Madam Priscilla Ikparen, appreciated the states government commitment to healthcare and calls for proper utilization of this report in improving the health sector especially in the area of human resources mobilization.
Jhpiego promised to include Zamfara in the next training that will be conducted for healthcare workers in the State.
In their good will Message WHO appreciate the government commitment and strong political will at both State and LGA levels to reduce Maternal and Neonatal mortality and remain committed to continue supporting the State in implementing its Operation plan as developed through the Sector Wide Approach.
