The Zamfara State commissioner for health Dr, Nafisa Muhammed Maradun has disclosed that, the state did not received any case of variant Polio-Viruses in the state since 2024.

Dr, Nafisa made the disclosure today at a media dialogue organised by United Nations Children Funds UNICEF, ahead of the flagging off Polio immunization in the state.

According to her, the high level of involvement of people from all levels including Her Excellency, the first Lady, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, and  Traditional Leaders under the leadership of His Royal Highness the Emir of Anka, has contributed towards the success of eradicating Polio in Zamfara state.

She further said that the local government chairmen and their Spouses, the media persons many of them present here today, and the  front line workers who worked in scorching heat and fight against Fake Finger Marking, make the April polio vaccination round indeed very successful in the state.

"This collective action is the need of the hour if we must meet the goal of ending transmission of the deadly polio-virus by the end of 2025.

"We have all the right tools. We know that the oral polio vaccine has brought down the incidence of paralysis due to polio viruses by 99.9% around the world.

She however warned that Zamfara State Government has zero tolerance to fake finger marking, which is a deplorable practice of some health workers marking the fingers of children without giving them the Oral Polio Vaccine.

Also speaking the United Nations Children’s Funds (UNICEF)  Social Specialist, Sokoto Field Office, Isah Ibrahim, has declared the Zamfara state free of polio virus and commended the state government for its commitment towards ensuring that every child under five years received polio vaccine in the state.

"We want to commend the Zamfara state governor, Dauda Lawal, the Commissioner for Health, the ES SPHCDB, health workers, VCM, and our colleagues from the media for your support for the April polio vaccination round,” he said.

According to him, the support of the state government made the round successful despite many challenges encountered in reaching out to children with the oral polio vaccine.
