Zamfara State to Validate Nutrition Strategy

 By Aminu Abdullahi Gusau

Zamfara State is set to validate a new strategy to combat severe malnutrition, which affects an estimated 250,000 children in the state.

With support from UNICEF, relevant stakeholders in Zamfara State, including the Ministry of Health, State Primary Healthcare Board, ministry of planning and budget, CSOs, community leaders, and the academia convened a  meeting to finalize the Nutrition Social and Behavioral Change (SBC) Strategy.

The strategy aims to improve maternal infant and young child and adolescent nutrition, dietary practices, challenge negative socio-cultural norms, and reduce malnutrition rates.

It builds on previous efforts, including the National Nutrition SBC strategy and utilized evidence from a formative research supported by UNICEF on key barriers and enablers to optimal nutrition practices.

Expected outcomes of the SBC strategy include improved nutrition practices, stronger collaboration among health stakeholders and faith-based groups, increased advocacy for nutrition funding, and empowered community for collective actions through civil society organizations and government bodies for sustainable social and behavior change.

The meeting is a crucial step towards finalization and launching of the strategy for implementation in Zamfara State.

Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, Commissioner of Health, was represented by the Director of Administration Primary Healthcare Board, Ai'nau Sani Ahmad Tsafe, Dr. Husaini Yakubu Anka, Executive Secretary of the Primary Healthcare Board, was represented by Abdulrazak Bashir, Director of Nutrition.

The statement was signed and issued to newsmen in Gusau by Suleiman Isah, ANIPR, Information Officer
