Banditry Attack in Sokoro Forces Mass Displacement of Communities

Shagari, Sokoto State – A recent banditry attack in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State has forced hundreds of residents from several communities to flee their homes, raising fresh humanitarian concerns.

During a joint assessment visit to the temporary settlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at the 30 Houses Estate in Shagari town on Friday, 29th August 2025, officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) met with community leaders from the affected areas.

Among those consulted were Hakimin ‘Yan Dundaji, Malam Muhammad Bello Magaji, and Maigarin Tungar-Barke, Muhammadu Tudu, who confirmed that the attack, which occurred three days earlier, displaced residents of multiple villages.
The affected communities include Tungar-Barke, Lungu, Aske-Dodo, Tungar-Doruwa, Zango, ‘Yan Yandu, Tungar Na’anza, Ila, among others.

Currently, the displaced families are taking refuge at the 30 Houses Estate in Shagari town. While interacting with officials, they appealed for urgent government intervention, particularly the provision of security in their villages, to enable safe return to their homes.
